Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the name given to arranging the content and code of a web site in order to focus on specific words and phrases with a view to improving the placement in the results pages for those terms within the search engines.

Each day more than 100 million searches are carried out through search engines often resulting in thousands, sometimes millions of listings being displayed in the results. Having an attractive web site is not enough - appearing in the top positions within the search engines for relevant keywords and phrases is vital to secure visitors to your web site and hence more business to your company.

Some search engine optimisation companies that guarantee specified positions in search engines (ie No 1, top 3) implement means which are contrary to the search engine rules and so result in a "quick fix" - often leading to the ultimate banning of the web site by the search engines.

Any positioning in search engine results depends on many factors, not least of which is the number of competitors for the same keywords or key phrases, the optimisation of those competitor's sites and their link popularity.
